Dr. Faust (M.D., M.Ph., M.A.) is a medical ethicist, Past President of the American College of Preventive Medicine, and author of the book Prevention vs. Treatment: What's the Right Balance? He is a member of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities and the Society of Jewish Ethics, as well as a clinical associate professor at the University of New Mexico and a member of the Christus St. Vincent Ethics Committee.
Healthcare-providers (HCPs) have professional and ethical standards of conduct that guide loyalties, primarily to patients and the state. At the same time HCPs are individuals with other professional, family and social roles with limited obligations to avoid harm. Sometimes these various loyalties create significant conlicts in choosing a course of action, particularly when it comes to individual patients. How does Judaism inform the ethical balance between societal and professional roles? Some examples of these conflicts include using medical knowledge during participation in state-sentenced death penalties, monitoring health status during interrogations, and breaking confidentiality to report occupational exposures of spousal abuse.
In his book Prevention vs. Treatment: What's the Right Balance
Dr. Faust clarifies the nature of the empirical and moral debates about the proper balance of prevention and treatment; the book pursues those debates from a wide range of perspectives, many not often heard from in health policy.
